Fens are wetlands that occur where mineral-rich ground water seeps from glacial formations such as gravel hills. At the Lake in the Hills Nature Preserve the limestone gravel makes the ground water rich in calcium. Rare plants that thrive in this alkaline water bloom throughout the growing season.
